How was Golden Gate Park created?

Golden Gate Park was created starting in 1870 on over 1,000 acres of windswept sand dunes known as the Outside Lands. Engineer William Hammond Hall surveyed and led the effort to transform this uninviting terrain into a lush urban park by planting trees, grasses, and installing innovative irrigation systems.
