One of San Francisco's most infamous and intriguing attractions, Alcatraz Island is not to be missed. This National Historic Landmark is a short ferry ride from Pier 33 at Fisherman's Wharf, which is located less than two miles from Hotel Nikko.

The highlight of Alcatraz Island is the former federal prison that can be experienced through different tours, including the Cellhouse Audio Tour where you'll hear the voices of actual guards and inmates discussing what life was like on the inside. There are also nighttime tours along with an orientation film and information-rich museum displays.

Interested in nature? Hiking down to the Bay, visiting the old parade ground, and bird watching are just a few fun things you can do on Alcatraz Island.

Adults (18-61) & Juniors (12-17): $38.35, Seniors (62+): $36.10, Children (5-11): $23.50. Children under 4: Free.

Hours

Ferries depart from Pier 33 for Alcatraz Island from 8:45 a.m. until 3:50 p.m. for day tours and 5:55 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. for night tours.

  • How much time should I allot for my visit to Alcatraz?
    On average, it's recommended that you set aside a minimum of 2.5 hours for your visit to Alcatraz Island. That time includes taking the round-trip ferry, which is about 15 minutes each way, touring the prison, and walking around the island to explore the gardens and displays. Of course, you're welcome to stay as long as you want. Just make sure to check the schedule for the last ferry back to San Francisco.
  • Where can I park for the Alcatraz Island ferry?
    The ferry for Alcatraz Island leaves from Pier 33 at Fisherman's Wharf. While there's street parking with meters, finding a spot and having enough metered time could be a challenge. It's best to leave your car in one of the more than a dozen parking lots that feature over 3,000 spaces. The most convenient lot, which is at 80 Francisco Street, is only a block away from Pier 33.
