In her residency, Kija Lucas examines the objects we carry through our lives and the memories and meanings we attach to them, qualities that surpass their initial usefulness. Something held by a loved one allows us to feel close to that person, even without their presence. While these objects can offer a sense of safety or closeness, they can also be emotionally heavy and difficult. We often introduce these objects to our own living spaces to remind us of what matters from our past. Visitors are invited to participate in the project by bringing objects of sentimental value to be photographed and added to a growing archive of images.

Kija Lucas is a Bay Area-based artist who uses photography to explore ideas of home, heritage, and inheritance. Lucas received a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from Mills College. Her work has been exhibited throughout the Bay Area at Headlands Center for the Arts, California Institute of Integral Studies, Alter Space, Intersection for the Arts, the Luggage Store, Mission Cultural Center, Root Division, and at Venice Arts in Los Angeles, Sala d'Ercole in Bologna, and Casa Escorsa in Guadalajara. Lucas has been an artist-in-residence at Montalvo Center for the Arts, Bunker Projects, Grin City Collective, and the Wassaic Artist Residency.Ticket Information
