Hotel's comprehensive environmental program and spirit of volunteerism define sustainable hospitality

SAN FRANCISCO

Since opening her doors in 1987, Hotel Nikko San Francisco has demonstrated an enduring commitment to environmental stewardship and dedication to helping the local and global community.

This year, Hotel Nikko's comprehensive green program garnered the Innovation Award from the Hotel Council of San Francisco. The hotel also received its seventh U.S. Energy Star Award for green initiatives in 2010.
In addition to continually seeking ways to improve water and energy conservation as well as waste management within the hotel, hotel colleagues dedicate more than 1,000 hours to assisting the local community. Outreach programs include serving lunch at Glide Memorial Church and volunteering with The Salvation Army, Florence Crittenton Services and Adopt-A-Family.

Taking a global approach to community service, Hotel Nikko has already generated almost $100,000 in donations for Red Cross recovery efforts following the earthquake and tsunami in Japan this year.
In 2010, the Hotel Council of San Francisco recognized the hotel's commitment to volunteerism with the Community Spirit Award and the California Hotel & Lodging Association honored Hotel Nikko San Francisco with its Community Service Award.

Below please find key components to the hotel's comprehensive environmental and community outreach program.

Responsible Meetings

Hotel Nikko offers planners the opportunity to minimize the ecological footprint of meetings and events through the reduction of waste and conservation of valuable resources.

  • Banquet menus highlight organic and sustainable offerings
  • Meeting attendees can enjoy an elegant spa-like water presentation rather than bottled water
  • Meeting planners can select hemp linens and sustainable centerpieces
  • Recycled notepads and pencils are available
  • Restaurant washrooms offer cloth rather than paper towels
  • Debris from events is recycled and recycling bins are placed in all meeting rooms
  • Meeting rooms feature dimmers to control levels of light
  • Coordination of volunteerism within the community is offered

Green Cuisine

The hotel is committed to purchasing local, organic, Fair Trade and sustainable food products whenever possible.

  • The culinary team purchases many of its ingredients from within the surrounding 150-mile radius
  • Hotel menus comply with standards set by the Monterey Aquarium Seafood Watch program to supply sustainable seafood

Waste Management

This program has reduced the amount of waste which is diverted to landfill by more than 75 percent. Recology Golden Gate Recycling recently honored Hotel Nikko San Francisco for having the highest diversion rate of any hotel in San Francisco.

  • Excess food scraps and kitchen waste are sent offsite to be converted to high-quality compost
  • Paper, plastic, tin, cardboard and aluminum are recycled
  • Housekeeping donates all linens no longer used by the hotel to homeless shelters and other charities; torn linen is used for cleaning rags
  • All hotel guestroom keys are fully biodegradable
  • A recycling program is available in all guest rooms
  • The hotel is a member of the Hotel Non-profit Collaborative and the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation (TNDC) which donate old furniture, carpeting and supplies to local charities and people in need

Water Conservation

  • Hotel Nikko San Francisco upgraded its previous 3.5 gallon per flush to 1.5 gallon per flush water closet and annually saves 6,000,000 gallons of water
  • "Green cards" allow guests to inform the hotel of their daily laundry preferences for linens and towels
  • The in-house laundry program utilizes a re-use system whereby the always fresh second and third rinse cycles are saved, filtered and used for the next first wash cycle, saving thousands of gallons of water each day

Energy Conservation

  • Guest room thermostats are equipped with sensors which turn the heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems off when the rooms are vacant
  • Service areas have motion sensors that turn off lighting when the vicinity is not in occupied
  • Eighty-two percent of the building's lighting is compact fluorescent or LED, saving electricity and cutting greenhouse gas emissions
  • Ventilation fans have Variable Frequency Drives installed
