Spend Quality Time on Alcatraz Island

This National Historic Landmark is just a short ferry ride from Pier 33 at Fisherman's Wharf, which is less than two miles from Hotel Nikko. The highlight is the former federal prison that can be experienced courtesy of several different tours, such as the Cellhouse Audio Tour where you'll hear the voices of actual guards and inmates discussing what life was like on the inside. There are also nighttime tours along with an orientation film and information-rich museum displays. Hiking down to the Bay, visiting the old parade ground, and bird watching are other equally interesting Alcatraz Island activities.

  • How much time should I allot for my visit?

On average, it's recommended that you set aside a minimum of 2.5 hours for your visit to Alcatraz Island. That time includes taking the round-trip ferry ride, which is about 15 minutes each way, embarking on a tour of the prison, and walking around the island to explore the gardens and displays. Of course, you're welcome to stay as long as you want. Just make sure to check the schedule for the last ferry back to San Francisco.
  • Where should I park for the Alcatraz Island ferry?

The ferry for Alcatraz Island leaves from Pier 33 at Fisherman's Wharf. While there's street parking with meters, it's a challenge. And even if you got lucky, you'll probably get a ticket because your meter will run out before you return. That said, you'd be wise to put your car in one of the more than a dozen parking lots that feature over 3,000 spaces. The most convenient lot, which is at 80 Francisco Street, is only a block away from Pier 33.
