San Francisco Performances celebrates its return to the historic Herbst Theatre with the blockbuster pairing of British composer-pianist Thomas Adès and Grammy-winning pianist Gloria Cheng. In a rare and always fun-to-watch four-hands performance, the duo is set to tackle Ligeti's Sonatina, as well as a two-piano version of a concert paraphrase of Adès own acclaimed opera Powder Her Face. The always-innovative Adès, dubbed by The Chronicle as "one of the most vibrant, original and technically dazzling musical voices of our day," is also an accomplished conductor, who appeared in all three of his roles with the San Francisco Symphony earlier this year. Noted pianist Gloria Cheng is both a Grammy Award-winner for Best Instrumental Soloist and a Stanford grad with a degree in Economics. She's been praised by The New York Times for the "commanding technique, color, and imagination" of her playing. Also on the program are works by Nancarrow and Messiaen.
