San Francisco Events - 27th Anniversary of the Sea Lions' Arrival @ Pier 39

The playful, cheeky sea lions at Pier 39 are one of the top attractions in San Francisco – but this raucous gang didn't always call the K-Dock waterfront home.

Shortly after the Loma Prieta earthquake of October 1989, the sea lions began arriving in droves. With abundant food and a safe place to sleep, the sea lions decided to stay. And this January 20-22, San Francisco celebrates the 27th Anniversary of the Sea Lions' Arrival at Pier 39.

It's always a good weekend to stroll the San Francisco waterfront and watch the sea lions cavort. But during the anniversary celebration, you can enjoy free walking tours featuring a real sea lion encounter.

From Friday through Sunday, tours will depart daily at 12 pm, 1 pm, 2 pm, and 3 pm from the sea lion statue located just west of the Pier 39 Entrance Plaza. Enjoy the tour, meet a sea lion, and receive a special treat at the end of the tour. You'll also receive special discounts at select merchants at Pier 39. Spend the rest of the day shopping, sightseeing, and dining at one of the many restaurants on the waterfront.
